I-League 2024-25 Commences Amid Broadcast Controversy; Sony Sports Network to Telecast Matches from Second Round

The 18th edition of the I-League kicked off as scheduled, following a last-minute resolution to a broadcast impasse that had threatened the participation of the 12 clubs. In the opening fixture, Gokulam Kerala FC secured a 3-2 away victory over Sreenidi Deccan in Hyderabad.

Broadcast Dispute and Resolution

Leading up to the season’s commencement, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) awarded broadcast rights to Shrachi Sports, intending to stream matches on their newly launched OTT platform, SSEN. This decision faced opposition from the clubs, who expressed concerns over the platform’s untested nature and potential sponsor withdrawal due to limited exposure.

In response, the clubs, under the I-League Clubs Association, issued a letter to AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, stating they would not participate unless Sony Sports Network was confirmed as the official broadcaster. Hours before kickoff, the AIFF acquiesced, announcing that Sony Sports Network would broadcast matches starting from the second round. The clubs agreed to cover 50% of the broadcasting costs to facilitate this arrangement.

Interim Streaming Arrangements

Due to the timing of the agreement, the first three matchdays will not be televised on Sony. Instead, these matches will be available for streaming on SSEN, Shrachi Sports’ OTT platform. Negotiations are ongoing between Sony and Shrachi Group to finalize production arrangements for live telecasts from the second round onward.

Conclusion

The resolution of the broadcast dispute underscores the clubs’ commitment to ensuring maximum visibility for the I-League. With Sony Sports Network set to telecast matches from the second round, fans can anticipate comprehensive coverage of the league moving forward.
