Atlético Madrid has officially signed Argentine forward Julián Álvarez from Manchester City in a deal valued at approximately $104 million. The 24-year-old striker has committed to a six-year contract with the Spanish club.
Álvarez joined Manchester City in 2022 from River Plate for £14 million. During his tenure with the English club, he made 103 appearances, scoring 36 goals and providing 18 assists. His contributions were instrumental in City’s successes, including winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Super Cup, and Club World Cup. On the international stage, Álvarez was part of the Argentina squad that clinched the 2022 World Cup and the Copa América.
Expressing his gratitude to Manchester City, Álvarez stated, “I am grateful to the club’s directors, technical staff, teammates, and fans for their support and the positive experiences during my time here.” He also conveyed his excitement about joining Atlético Madrid, noting, “I felt that I needed a change in my football career and Atlético offers me a new challenge.”
Atlético Madrid’s president, Enrique Cerezo, welcomed Álvarez, highlighting his impressive track record and expressing confidence in the positive impact he will have on the team. This acquisition is part of Atlético’s significant summer spending, which includes the signings of Alexander Sørloth and Robin Le Normand, totaling over €180 million.
Álvarez’s arrival aims to bolster Atlético’s attacking options following the departure of Álvaro Morata to AC Milan. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how the Argentine forward will integrate into Diego Simeone’s squad and contribute to the team’s ambitions in the upcoming season.
